About Dr. Aubry Koehler
I am a PhD licensed marriage and family therapist with 12 years of experience. I use a systemic approach in understanding relationship challenges. This means, rather than looking at each individual as an island, I account for how individual, family, and cultural factors affect one another. I believe that when we understand these interactions, we can better identify meaningful and sustainable solutions to the problems at hand.
My work is about strengthening and restoring healthy attachments. I use Emotionally-Focused Therapy and also draw on Gottman Institute principles and techniques. Working with multiple people in the room is a rewarding challenge for me as a therapist. I must practice “multidirectional partiality” (Boszormenyi-Nagy), meaning that in the therapy room, I model giving clients and their perspectives attention and validation even when those perspectives seem to be at odds.
As an open and affirming couple and family therapist, I am less concerned with your couple or family configuration and more so with how well members of a relationship/household are able to experience and reciprocate love, understanding, and connection of authentic selves. I believe that people can heal, and that healing together can be particularly transformative, for current and future generations. I would be honored to work with you on your couple or family journey. Let me know how I can help.
